'Supergirl' Season 1 Episode 1 'Pilot' Review

Non Spoiler Review- A terrific pilot to this new series! I was thoroughly impressed by the episode which featured amazing visual effects, charming performances, and a great tone. I like that the show is incorporating Superman into the show rather than pretending he doesn't exist in this universe like many other DC shows are forced to do in regards to certain characters. I also liked that the pilot set up how each episode will probably have Supergirl dealing with an alien similar to how 'The Flash' initially had a metahuman of the week. As a whole I liked the show a lot and can't wait to see the rest of the series!

*******There will be Spoilers from this point on*******

Highlights of the episode

1. Kara uses heat vision to defeat Vartox- The heat vision not only looked great onscreen but it was cool to see it used to superheat the axe to cause it to explode and defeat Vartox. I liked that she wasn't able to defeat him right away and actually wasn't completely in full control and comfortable with her powers yet. I liked that she will progressively become a better fighter and learn about her powers as the series progresses.
2. The costume's progression- One aspect I always find entertaining in the origin of any hero is the evolution of their costume and 'Supergirl' was no exception. I liked how there was a reason to add  change something about the costume. For example the cape assisted with the aerodynamics, and they made the cape out of a stronger material because it ripped.
3. Kara's mother's message- This reminded me of how Jor El appeared to Superman (Kal El) in 'Man Of Steel' and so I liked seeing that as somewhat of a nod to the film. I also liked that her mother's message helped give her the inspiration needed to defeat Vartox.
4. Kara saves a plane- I really enjoyed the sequence where Kara saves the plane from crashing as the visuals were great and it was fun to watch Kara use her powers on screen for the first time and save people for the first time as well.
5. Superman's presence on the show- I thought it was interesting how Superman clearly has a big presence on the show without actually being a part of it. He's mainly included through references and then was included in a flashback scene where his face isn't shown.
6. A familiar take-off- I liked seeing the end of the episode when Kara takes off in a familiar fashion to how Clark Kent typically does as Superman. It was a very cool reference to Superman as that's part of the icon of the character.
