Non Spoiler Review- So technically, 'Livewire' is actually episode 5 of 'Supergirl' although it's the fourth to air. Tonight's episode was swapped out because of a bombing supblot that CBS feared might appear insenstive in light of the horrific events in Paris so I will be reviewing it as though it were the fourth episode. I was surprised that this swap didn't seem to affect the flow in terms of the season's storyline and actually seemed to fit naturally after the events of next week's which makes me wonder if the planned fourth episode introduced any new subplots or interesting reveals since this fifth episode didn't seem to acknowledge anything along these lines. Overall, I'd say this was a huge improvement for the series as this episode's subplots were significantly more interesting, the action was awesome, and I felt a little bit more fun injected into the episode with a few humorous moments. Also, due to the switch of episodes this week I'm currently confused as to if the next episode that will be shown will be the fourth or sixth episode.
*******There will be Spoilers from this point on*******
Highlights of the episode
1. Supergirl stops Livewire- I really like it when a hero finds an inventive way to defeat a villain using logic and resources available to them and this was certainly a prime example as Kara's initial plan didn't work and so her super senses allowed her to know there was a water pipe underneath her that she could douse Livewire with. I also liked that this didn't kill Livewire but rather knocked her unconscious so the DEO could deal with imprisoning her.
2. Alex's father's death had something to do with the DEO- An interesting reveal was that Alex's father agree to work with the DEO to protect Kara and that the DEO had something to do with the DEO. I'm curious to see how Kara and Alex will uncover the truth from within the DEO since both are assisting the organization.
3. Kara saves Cat- I liked seeing Kara come to the aid of her boss throughout the episode as it's interesting to see her protect the one person who doesn't quite seem to even acknowledge or respect Kara. I'm curious to see if Cat will discover that Kara is Supergirl since Kara is her assistant and has been ignored by Cat Grant or if Kara will ever feel the need to tell Cat the truth.
4. Livewire- As with last week's episode, this episode's villain is once again not another alien, which I find to be refreshing and I particularly liked seeing the villain's origin in the episode establishing Livewire's motivations. I will say that she seemed very reminiscent of Electro from 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'. I drew this comparison due to how similarly the powers were for both characters.
5. The opening action scene- This episode's opening action sequence was one of the most thrilling of the series thus far with Kara taking down an alien prisoner who attempts to escape. This scene made good use of Kara's flight, strength, and aerobatics in the fight. I hope to see more exhilarating fight scenes like this throughout the series.
